AI, Society and Democracy

Our Mission

In the AI, Society and Democracy working group, we are committed to understanding the impact of data and AI on people, society, and the design of political choices and public services in the information age of democracy. Leading I4CAIHR research on social justice and social policy, we strive to foster a positive vision for society amidst the rapid advancement of technology.

Exploring the Impact of Data and AI

As data and AI permeate every aspect of our lives – from education and healthcare to elections and relationships – we delve into how individuals and communities are influenced by these technologies. We elevate marginalized voices, examine how social policy can address power imbalances inherent in data and AI, and empower individuals and communities to thrive. Our research scrutinizes how data-driven technologies and AI reshape our understanding of the state and the ‘social contract’, aiming to articulate a vision of society that is equitable and just in the information age.

Key Areas of Inquiry

Our research focuses on several critical questions:

  • How do data and AI shape and perpetuate inequalities?
  • What impact do data and AI have on identity, community, diversity, and solidarity?
  • How do data and AI influence access to information, agency, and decision-making processes?

Influencing Policy and Practice

Through our work, we seek to inform the practice, policy, and design of public services. By developing a sociotechnical understanding of AI in public services, we explore how the use of AI impacts complex systems and addresses pressing societal challenges. Utilizing a range of research methods, including desk research, workshops, ethnographic studies, and public participation, we gather evidence to shape politics and policies that enhance wellbeing, justice, and inclusivity.

Engagement and Collaboration

We engage with frontline professionals, public services, expert bodies, citizens, regulators, and government departments to explore how AI can be utilized in the public interest. Our deliberations aim to guide the effective and legitimate use of AI in public services and to inform their evolution in light of technological advancements. Furthermore, we strive to build capacity and knowledge among public sector stakeholders, enabling them to critically engage with emerging technologies and make informed decisions.

Join Us

Join us in our mission to create a society where the benefits of AI and data-driven technologies are equitably distributed, where justice prevails, and where public services serve the needs of all. Together, we can shape a better future for everyone in the information age.
